Methanol (CH₃OH) is a versatile chemical with applications in energy, chemicals, and fuel industries. India’s increasing energy demand and the need for import substitution have led to a renewed focus on domestic methanol production. One of the most viable methods is coal gasification, which utilizes India’s abundant coal reserves to produce methanol in an efficient and sustainable manner.
Coal gasification is a thermochemical process that converts coal into synthesis gas (syngas), a mixture of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H₂). This syngas is then catalytically converted into methanol. The key steps involved are:
- Coal Preparation: Coal is crushed, dried, and blended to optimize gasification.
- Gasification: Coal reacts with oxygen and steam at high temperatures (1,200–1,500°C) in a gasifier, producing syngas.
- Gas Cleaning & Conditioning: Removal of impurities such as sulfur, ash, and carbon dioxide.
- Methanol Synthesis: Syngas is converted to methanol using a catalyst (typically copper-zinc-alumina) under moderate pressure and temperature.
- Methanol Purification: Distillation to achieve fuel-grade or chemical-grade methanol.

The major advantages of Coal-Based Methanol Production in India are as under:
- Utilization of Domestic Resources: Reduces dependence on imported natural gas and crude oil.
- Energy Security: Enhances India’s self-sufficiency in methanol production.
- Carbon Utilization & Sustainability: Carbon capture and storage (CCS) can be integrated to reduce emissions.
- Industrial Synergies: Can supply methanol to fuel blending programs, petrochemical industries, and hydrogen production.
